NN Self Assessment

Competition Diagnostic Survey template, orginally developed by George B. Moffat.

Practice Techniques

  1. Number of cross country miles normally flown before the first big contest of the year (not counting flights of under 100 miles). Generally fly several GTA flights before the first Regional at Perry.
  2. Typical length of flights in miles 150 miles hours 3 to 4 hours -- limited by GTA task calls.
  3. Are flights normally races against other pilots?    Yes / No
  4. Geographical area in which you usually train.  GTA training area includes ridges, hill country, and flat land in the southeastern US.
  5. Specific problem areas you have worked on (e.g. weak weather flying, starts, final glides, etc.
    a.  marginal day flying, wasting time "sinkling" in very weak thermals and too many "tries".
    b.  working on detecting the need to shift gears up and down
    c.  use of Height Band

Techniques used?  GTA provides significant opportunity to fly with nationally ranked pilots in a competitive environment over several different task areas.  We call realistic tasks for the given weather and discuss the flying afterwards.  In addition, I set specific goals for flying when flying alone at my home airfield.
